Hi! I am having trouble with my grammer and 'tense's' on my story. I've posted some of it
here and it was brought ot my attention. (TY) My best bud has also been kind of proofreading it as well and has noticed my tendency to be v. wordy. Is there
something on the web (pref. free) that can help me with this? I've been using the standard spell/gammar check that comes with Microsoft word. Any ideas?

If you've got a lot of time on your hands, read this whole thing from beginning
to end. Not necessarily because you need it, but just to get a sense of how everything integrates into the massive motley magpie that is the English
language.
If you don't have a lot of time, you may have to do your own Googling for specifics you're not too sure about. "Kidnapping Nubile Victorian Ladies Since 1867" |

Hmm... there are a few good books around. I keep the Oxford Style Manual close at hand for all my academic work, but I haven't found anything for creative
writing that quite measures up. Second hand English grammar texts can be really helpful.
Unfortunately, there is no quick fix. Reference books only help if you know that you have probably gone wrong somewhere and need to check. Which means buying a grammar book and reading it. I haven't found any internet sites which come close to the comprehensive texts I pick up from garage sales and second-hand places for a couple of dollars each... |

"Eats, Shoots and Leaves" is by Lynne Truss is pretty good. It's not as dull as most stuff and is actually kinda funny...though in a bit of an
abusive way...

One of the best ways I found to learn English grammar (since they would rather teach overanalysis of *cough* "classics" than grammar in schools), is
to take a foreign language. To understand foreign grammar, you've got to get English down.
Or you could just borrow my sister for a while. She'll set you straight.
