I write mostly sci-fi and the biggest blip on my personal radar is coming up with names for sci-fi animals and food. Most of my characters are human/humanoid
but I can't really feed 'em spagetti or nice thick ribeye. What's a mother to do?

If they came from Earth, then yes by all means feed them spaghetti, coffee and pizza. We read this thing in class that said that in science fiction, it tends
to be food and animals that get odd names. Calling a rabbit a "smeerp" does not make it some weird alien. Just stick with what people know or
you'll be spending pages and pages explaining what the food is or what the animals do.
Some people move in lesbian circles. I move in bisexual dodecahedrons. |

Adding a familiar descriptor to a strange word (and being CONSISTANT about that other word's use) is good too: roast emdek, mashed nuuv, pleeka kabob with
spiced garhash. Make it known what kind of animals something might come up against and use earthly descriptions - "on their homeworld a rabbit served this
function - but didn't have so many legs", "they thought it was a squirrel, but with an extra eye it threw the science team off a bit".
I often go with the assumption that in addition to whatever weirdly exotic animals there are, triple-tusked emdek with their massive armor plates but oh-so-tasty insides, there are also more normal things which serve exactly the same purpose as on earth, squirrels and rabbits, birds and insects. On my rpg world, insects have taken a lot of roles because they simply evolved and stayed bigger than some mammals - so I've got "singing beetles" which are the size of your head and are in their larval form quite a delicacy rather like lobster - and cooked exactly the same way. But they sing - and can't really be eaten out of their larval form... because they tend to fight back lol. |

Well actually I have a few generators - the Monster Name one may work. But I take it you mean tamer animals? Or things that are more mundane sounding?
As for food, hmmmm. That's intriguing. How could that work? |

If I had 20 more hours a day and at least another clone I'd be writing a "Tonight's Menu" generator....
Tonight, the specialty of the house is the (fill in the blank meat/veggie) soup, served with (salad) and your choice of (fingerfoods)(fingerfoods). Would you like to see the wine list? |
