Earth, 2534 AD. The world has changed greatly in the last five hundred years. Overcrowding and pollution were choking the planet during the 21st century. With the exhaustion of the last major reserves of natural fuel sources, the third world war erupted for control of the remainders. The result was devastating. Their resources finally exhausted after eighty years of war, the major powers began to crumble around the year 2100. The Earth's population had gone from a staggering nine billion, to only five billion. Nuclear fallout, a short lived ice age, and the plagues that followed the war hampered the population even more. While the richer nations were able to survive, just, the poor died. Over the next hundred years or so, the population dropped to less than two billion. Recovered enough to attempt to regain some of their former prosperity, the remaining nations began exploiting what natural resources they could find, and rebuilding some of what they had lost. For fifty years, each endured almost complete isolation. Then, as technology levels slowly began to rise again, the occasional skirmish was fought whenever a new oil field or natural gas reserve was discovered. But none of these lasted long. New power sources were discovered, and a period of expansion occurred around the year 2300. This lasted a further half century, until it became impractical to harvest these new energy sources, and many people abandoned newly built cities for the safe havens of larger communities based around more reliable resources. Finally, in 2400, Nuclear Cold Fusion was perfected. Technology, and quality of life were finally on the rise once more. For a precarious fifty years, various corporations sprung up to take advantage of this new energy source. These corporations swiftly became the major powers, though the age of corporations was short lived, and many fell to ruin before long. Humanity, eager to not repeat the mistakes of the past once more, grew only slowly from then on. Thus, around the year 2500, the world population finally exceeded 2 billion again.
New power sources might have saved the human race, but for the planet it was largely too late. Many once inhabited places were now vast tracks of desert. Other cities became swamped by overgrowth of plants, and some coastal cities had been long lost to the seas. But some places still retain their former, lush beauty.
The world is a harsh place to live now, though not entirely a desolate one.
