I've been putting a few stats in and have come up with this...

The whole Earth (148,939,063km squared*) should have 4,468,171,890 people living on it and only 23 big cities. There are only 163 universities.

If we've been building castles for the last 3000 years (which, in some form or another, we have been), there should be 138,309 standing fortifications on Earth, 89,363 of which are still in use.
* Just the land, not the water, if that's not clear.

Also, the United Kingdom...

It should have a population of 7,287,000 people with one big city and 16 other cities. It has no universities. Suggesting we've been building castles and things since 0 BC some time, there should be 211 standing fortifications, and only 65 are ruined or abandoned.

Finally, USA (begrudgingly)...

The Domesday Book gives the Yanks a population of 288,872,730 and just 6 big cities. They have 10 universities. The Americans, I don't think, ever were really big on the castle building so I've left this out.

Summary
* We've built fewer castles than we should have done.
* UK is ridiculously overpopulated (we've actually got some 60 million, not the 7 million this suggests).
* USA needs castles.
* The whole world is overpopulated by some two billion.
