I woke up after what had seemed like an eternal slumber. I found myself lying flat on my back in some kind of cylinder, made of what looked like thick glass. I could hear two faint voices, slowly getting closer. One was very loud and deep, probably coming from a very large man. The other was definately a man's voice, though much softer. I was almost dead on. Above me stood two men, one in the typical scientist's white lab coat, the other in what appeared to be a uniform, consisting of all black pants, boots, shirt, and trenchcoat.. Where am I? I tried to ask, but my mouth seemed to be drier than a desert. "Open the damn thing, he cant breathe in there!"
Suddenly the glass on the front of the chamber slid to the left side, and I tried to sit up, but my muscles would have none of that. They hadnt been used in ages, and hurt like hell anytime I tried to move. "Here, give him this." The short, skinny man in the lab coat gave me a small red pill. I cautiously took it, not knowing what it was, it could have been poison for all I knew. I tried to figure outwhere I was or what was going on. Suddenly, I felt completely refreshed, as if I had been zapped by a bolt of pure energy. I sat up and looked around the room. Four white walls, with various kinds of equipment that I could not identify. There were multiple screens on the wall, but they seemed to be part of it, not mounted on it or attached in any way. "Where am I, what's going on?" I asked the two men. The scientist began speaking "You've been placed inside a cryo-" The larger man cut him off. "We don't need your nerdy, drawn out explanations here!" "Hello. My name is General Bryan Sanford. You've probably broken the record for the longest time anyone has ever been asleep." He chuckled.
"You most likely don't remember anything from before, but about 800 years ago, in the year 2007, you were selected by the former United States government to go on some secret time travelling mission. The exact details have been, well, lost in time, but here's the basic plan from what we know. You would be sent sometime far in the future, they weren't sure when or where you would end up, so it was very risky. You have been given special implants, enhanced senses, and other upgrades."
As the general blabbered on, I began thinking "This must be some dream, or maybe I'm in a corny sci-fi movie, sure sounds like it." The general continued "You will be sent back to May of 1999, when the end of the world began." End of the world? I was alive back in 2007, the world certainly hadn't ended then!" "You'll understand when you go back. But before you go, you're gonna need an identity. Think of a good name."
"Err...."
"How about Sam Gordon? If you dont like it, well, you're gonna use it anyway!" As the glass on the front of the chamber slid closed, I laid back down, trying to figure out what the hell was going on. I closed my eyes, and heard a loud whirring sound, followed by silence.
I awoke to a low rumble that grew louder and louder. I quickly opened my eyes, just in time to see a large semi barreling towards me. Without even having time to think about what to do, I scrambled up, realizing I was in the middle of a two lane highway. The only choice I had was to jump over the guardrail. I didnt think about how I could shatter my legs or worse, my skull, I just jumped over. It was then that I noticed something different. It was as if I was falling in slow motion, and could easily control how I landed. To my great surprise, my legs didnt break, and I was not hurt at all.
But where was I? Looking around, I noticed I was in probably the dirtiest, smelliest river around. The water was a greenish-brown color, I didnt want to think about what was in it.
The only way out of here was to crawl through the thick brush back up to the road. It was littered with paper, old beer bottles, soda cans, the usual trash youd see. But at least I knew I was back in my own time period, or at least close to it. I still thought that all this might just be some weird, crazy dream and that I could wake up in an instant.
I managed to get back up onto the road. I waited for what seemed like hours for a car to come by, hoping someone would pick me up. Finally, a small white pickup truck stopped on the side of the road. The man inside hesitated for a few seconds, making sure I wasnt some serial killer, escaped psycho, or other scum of the earth. He opened the door and greeted me with an unexcited "Get in." in a southern accent, not even bothering to look at me.
"So who are you?"
"My name's Sam Gordon. And you are?"
"Dave Porter"
That was all the man said for a good ten minutes, he then asked me,
"So, where are you goin' anyway?"
I honestly wasn't sure. I just had to figure out what was going on, where I was supposed to go, what I was supposed to do. It seemed as if these questions would not be answered easily.
Where's the nearest big city?"
"That'd be Washington D.C."
I began thinking, maybe this has something to do with the government or the president? I wasn't sure.
Take me there then.
I figured that if I was sent back, wherever I ended up was where I needed to be. Dave dropped me off a block from the White House, not even saying goodbye.
"Its the most famous place here, I'm sure you can find your way around huh?" He drove off rather quickly, not even bothering to tell me where I could get a hotel, rent a car, or even where the closest restaraunt was. I did have some money, the general had put it in my pocket when he sent me back. How he got the money I don't know, but at least it provided me with a start, should I be forced to live here.
