It's clearly a case of unintentionally biting social commentary. It's implying that the sort of people who rifle through books like these aren't necessarily looking for originality - just something easily paraphrased that will catch the attention of the readers of the thesis they're working on - and suggesting that perhaps this is not the way our society should be constructed.
