(I guess this just proves what an uber-geek I am.)
As I understand it, Batman was created during a time when the real issue was inner city gang warfare; hence the reason all of his villians tend to be gansters. The villians were so popular as villians that they just stuck. On the other end of the spectrum, Superman was created during WWII to fight the Nazis, and initally was not as much of a goody-too-shoes as he is now. However, when WWII ended, he ended up butting heads with everyone from aliens to Lex Luthor. But every time a war comes up, he's involved. Capt. America, same deal. Oddly enough, Ironman also is part of this catagory, but was orginally a result of Vietnam, not Afganistian (like the movie shows). Not that a little update hurts.
There are a few consistencies. Everyone joined in the 'war against drugs' in the 80s, thought Spiderman lays claim to being the first one to do so. After 9/11, the superheroes launched an attack of their own. All of them work with each other on occasion (usually after fighting each other first) though due to copyright laws DC characters work within the Justic League, while Marvel character work within SHIELD and they don't work together. The exception to this is the Fantastic 4 who, for reasons I haven't quite fathomed, worked with Batman and Robin at one point. All of them tackled racism (ever noticed how so many superheroes are white?). Ironically enough, Green Lantern, who was one of the most deeply accused of racism against blacks, became black in later episodes of Justice League.
No, this isn't anything resembling an obession at all...
