He was one of the people who defined my life. He helped create the game that inspired an industry, computer games, and more. No D&D, no talking to my friends about their WOW addiction or wondering WTF is up with a Final Fantasy Plot. D&D and Champions, and other RPGs, are how I met most of my friends in high school and college. They're how enough of a gaming industry evolved that I actually WROTE some RPGs professionally. Its how I got into reading fantasy, not just science fiction. D&D is why I enjoyed Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser and more. So what can I say? Thanks Gary.

What an AWESOME surname! And yes, he's dead. Very sad. Everything we do is a choice. I find it weirdly ironic that the day he died, was the first day I knew we shared our birthday... o.o And on one hand, I do truly respect what he did to start the whole thing up. On the other... he was a bit of a jerk, and the last interview I read made him sound like he literally invented fiction. So... yah. There are always two sides to things. I wouldn't be involved in writing my own RPG without him, and that's pretty much 'nuff said.

Posts: 9 (03/05/08 13:14:11) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I was actually buying my D&D Basic Game Set when I found out today, which came as something of a shock considering this was my first serious attempt at pen and pencil RPGS. And he was only 69, which was quite a young age to die at these days. Although I do not think he actually created fantasy himself, I do think he helped define fantasy as it is interpretated today by popularising Tolkienesque themes and races such as Elves, Dwarves and Halflings/Hobbits through games such as Dungeons and Dragons. He shall be sorely missed.

Unfortunately, i didn't know who he was until now, but for sure he seems to be quite an importantly good person. I'm not a particular fan of D&D (perhaps if i actually made an attempt at playing it, things may change) but as for everything else, i'm glad that he was around at some point. Too bad that i never knew that he existed until he dies... that's rather ironic.
