I wish I had a specific time of every day at which I was inspired: say, at 9:36 precisely, a brilliant idea would pop into my head and I'd spend the next 48 minutes and 2 seconds writing it all down. It would suck if I was out doing things, though I'd just go all blank and wide-eyed in the middle of conversations, and feverishly excuse myself to find a pen and paper.

Seriously, though, I do tend to write best under two separate conditions. One is pitch black (except for the screen) and silence (except for the keys). The other is dappled sunlight and birdsong, with maybe a few waves thrown in. As I'm sure you can imagine, the results of these exercises tend to be pretty different.

I have a laptop, so I take it outside with me, and I generally head up to the hill that overlooks the bay. It's a bit windy, and there's the odd excitable dog, but it's still brilliant on a good day.

Also, you must not disrupt this Jessica's talent. Mediums (media, sorry) are rare enough these days, and I've got to have someone around to keep tabs on Thomas Edison's ghost for me. I have this hunch that he's planning something dire...
