I had an idea a while ago about a generically insane musician/inventor, who has a dream in which the Devil dictates a musical score for piano to him that can only be played by a pianist with more than ten fingers. He wakes up, transcribes the whole thing, and sinks into depression when he realizes he can't play it. Long story short, he desperately builds himself a pair of mechanical hands with seven fingers each, chops off his own hands and attaches the new ones with the help of someone else (I dunno who, but he obviously can't do it himself) and then discovers, oh horror, that the hands aren't dextrous enough to even hit one key precisely, let alone play his magnum opus. The Devil has a good chuckle to himself.

Then I had an idea about a sequel to The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, in which Jekyll's last letter explaining everything was discovered to be a fake, and he and Hyde actually were two separate people, and also lovers. That fell by the wayside when I discovered I had no idea how to reproduce Stevenson's writing style.

Then I had an idea for a Lovecraftian yarn about a man (we'll call him A) who switches minds with another man (B) and ends up killing Man B inside his body, leading Man A to be arrested instead of Man B for the murder of Man A who was really Man B at the time. It was going to be a confusing revenge story where Man A suffers himself (as Man B) to be executed so that everyone else will think that Man B was a dirty criminal and his reputation will be destroyed, but I confused myself when I thought about it, and thus decided that no one would understand.

Then I had another idea about the "survivors" of the wrecked Franklin Expedition turning wendigo when they resorted to cannibalism on top of lead poisoning, and becoming a tribe of cannibal monsters in a world where 19th century oil interests made the Wild West extend a lot further north than it did in ours. Basically, cowboys in parkas riding across the tundra on muskoxen, hunting for crazed immortal man-eating perversions of famous explorers.

Then I had another idea about Lugh and the Tuatha de Danaan as superintelligent aliens communicating with the Celts through their Druid translators and commissioning Stonehenge and suchlike, only to be driven out several thousand years later by Arthur and his knights, led by Merlin who was actually a member of an interstellar task force to prevent alien intervention on developing worlds, and who moved the entire henge from Ireland to England where he figured they would forget about it. That developed into a sort of travelling-vigilante story about a Paleolithic, Merlinesque character who scoured the world for signs of ancient astronauts (the Nazca lines, the pyramids of Egypt, the Jomon Dogu of Japan, the Valdivian stuatues in Chile, the Sampo of Finnish legend, the characters of Hindu myth, etc.) and drove out the aliens in some way, leading to the wierd anachronisms we see today.

Don't nobody nick these ideas, neither. I'm lookin' at you, lurkers who haven't signed up and are clearly trawling the Sector behind the scenes, looking for ideas to steal! I know you're out there!!

Actually, Anacharis's just reminded me of another idea I had about two years ago, about a quest to restore the sun (which went down and didn't come up the next day), drawing almost entirely upon mythological figures and stories from around the world. The main characters are tentatively Ishtar, Raven, Enkidu, Isis, Vainamoinen, Hanuman, and Fand, although there are way too many too choose from.
