OK I've just seen the film. So let's sum this up:

* It is basically a live-action cartoon.

* It is a mix of the old cartoon and modern anime/videogame aesthetics.

* Said aesthetics in many cases are what you get when you let Willy Wonka make Bladerunner.

* It is FILLED with references to the old cartoon so they knew what they were doing.

* It is not a totally remake or sequel, more an homage - what the cartoon SEEMED to be to people like me who watched it when I was eight. Thus...

See, I think stories that balance realistic (as in fits the setting, not fits "reality") and human have the ULTIMATE impact.

Thats one reason Speed Racer impressed me - though it was an "unrealistic world", it played by its own rules, and the human element really drew you
in - because it IS a world where hot-shot racers fake their deaths to become superspys and families run custom auto businesses out of their homes - but the
relations are ones we can recognze.

Actually what I'd have done is have a clear cabin so you can see the people in them - and shattering the cabin would then make them human and vulnerable,
and thus you achieve realism and the same pathos!

That is a fantastic reason, but they sacrificed realism for it so the film suffered. Has no one ever heard of magical futuristic plexiglass?

I am trying to persuade my dad to let me go see this film, HaHA.

Seriously.

But one little unimportant point I feel inclined to make is this: the reason why they gave the power-suited fighters in the 3rd Matrix film open cabins was to
allow the audience to relate to them as people rather than robots. (My AS-Level course in Film Studies sure pays for itself!)
