I wasn't criticising your critique about the wake - although I do find it interesting that Australia and New Zealand appear to have bastardised the term. I'll change it when I think of an appropriate replacement.

Just for the record I was referring the wake where you stay up through the funeral. I made a point to look it up before I commented. If I'm going to critique, I want to be right. As for the party afterwards...I still don't know what that is called. In my family we just call it a party. Of course, there's a lot more alcohol involved.

It must be an Aussie/NZ thing. All the funeral's I've been to have the wake afterwards - usually an opportunity for everyone to get completely plastered and forget all about the day.

Interesting. I looked it up and got the same definition as you, Vortex, but I've only ever heard it used to refer to the party that occurs after the funeral.

You both refer to the idiom form of the word "wake":

The tsunami left destruction in its wake.
OR
Ruin was left in the wake of the tsunami.

Our Dear Lady friend uses it in the noun form.
The term "wake" means a vigil, held for the body of a dead person before burial. I.E: Devoted watching or staying awake during the hours one would usually sleep through,...

Since there seems to be a revival of the Creative Discussion boards, I thought I'd post something. This is something that is a bit of an anomaly - it is not the kind of thing that I write at all. But it exists. I'm a bit disillusioned at the moment and wonder if I'm wasting my time on it. Any feedback would be much appreciated - I'm sorry to be posting a first draft, but I'm hoping that it isn't as bad as I think. Be as harsh as you need to be, and harsher again....
