I have been over and over this thing, added, changed, edited, deleted, printed values, everything I could think of to debug and troubleshoot what I'm doing wrong and I can NOT figure out what I'm missing. Why does my generator not work? It gives the correct number of line breaks, so its trying to do something, but the data is all blank, even though I've got all kinds of stuff in the data file now. I even set my htaccess file to register globals 1.zanysite.com/toys/rpgitem...andtoy.php

SUNUVA!

*hangs head*

Well... crap. Thank you to everyone who responded. And I apologize. It was indeed the binary upload issue. I deleted the files and reuploaded them, making sure it was binary... and it all works fine now. I seriously do not believe it. I've been doing webstuff for years now and thought I knew at least the basics. I feel stupid. Thank you all, though!

I'm using XP and uploaded it to ... an apache server I think, I can't remember (I just pay for my hosting and they do their thing). I'm not getting any errors or anything, like I'd expect if I uploaded it as binary or not or whatever, its just blank. Like I said, I debugged what it was reading to the page, and its reading the file, but something is happening to it afterword. =(

Hmmm, my first thought is how you uploaded the files - is it a Unix box? If so, and you uploaded from windows without doing it as Binary you may have gotten it futzed up a bit.

The main file, randtoy.php opens datafile.dat (where all the info is kept). It's doing its thing right, its reading each line of the file, I checked that when I debugged it. It's just losing the variable or something once its done that. I suspect it has something to do with global variable and scope and functions but I'm weak on that.

... I'm utterly ignorant of how PHP programs are written but isn't there usually a link somewhere in the program itself that references the data file? There's no data file referenced, just the quantities that you can make of the generated words. I see by backing up into your directory that there IS a data file, but it's not being used... Again I don't really know squat but usually isn't there a reference to it? I usually go into page source to check generators whether they're java or php and...
