Anyone seen Avatar, or going to see it? It has the biggest budget for a film ever and the trailer looks spectacular. I read a review that said it was horribly written, far too long but completely and utterly worth it. It does look good...

Namely, has the time arrived for Datesims in the US culture?

Datesims have a rather creepy reputation in the US. The ones we see from Japan often contain questionable content. By questionable of course I mean soul-searing horror that would make Cthulu call for his mommy and curl up in a blanket. Yes I know there are Datesims...

International Pretend You're a Time Traveler Day 2009

Today (or yesterday as it's now ten past one in the morning, tomorrow) was December 8th. Also known as International Pretend You're a Time Traveler Day, at least by Dresden Codak standards.

Today, two people walked around Greenwich dressed outlandishly and saying unbelievable things.

This post, both at Fan To Pro and Seventh Sanctum discusses how artists aren't appreciated. One poster noted that he prefers the term illustrator, which made me think.

What DO you call artists as a term of respect. I can agree at times the term 'artist' is a mix of grab-bag and at times can be taken as neutral at best, so what do you say?

A lot of my creative energy's been going towards cooking lately, so I figured I'd start a thread about it- you know, a place to swap recipes, share our gustatory predilections, that sort of thing. Anyone interested?

Anyway, to kick things off, here's something I came up with last night that's kinda nice. Sort of a rosemary-tomato rice thing, very flavorful, very aromatic. cheap, too, which is good.

Well I haven't been as active lately between work, stress, more work, strange hours, classes, and now - illness. Go figure.

So I wanted to toss out something I read about that I thought was neat - Idea Tithing.

We all get more great ideas than we can use - so why not go and SHARE them. Make a point to share story ideas, game ideas, etc. with people.

I keep a book for brainstorming in which I write down great ideas, and I think I'll make more of an...

I decided to sit NaNoWriMo out. I had a long few weeks (one reason I haven't been around much). I just got one book to my editor. I've finished a major generator, started a contest, etc. I needed a break.

So NOW Ideas keep coming to me. It figures.

I think that NaNo, frankly, has become its very own phenomena, cultural/subcultural. I have never participated but it seems to have sort of soaked into fan/geek DNA, which may explain why I A) felt compelled to do...

I've been playing Demon's Souls on the PS3. You may have heard of it - it's a very hard fantasy RPG.

In the game, a kingdom is beset by soul-stealing demons. This in turn attracts adventurers, who know that in turn they can claim the demon's souls which can be used for power, weapons, spells, etc. You play one of the adventurers.

Sadly, you die, and your soul is bound to a mysterious place called the Nexus where a few refugees gather. In a spirit form...

The 3 Problems with writing

Now that I'm writing again - in this case mostly non-fiction - I've found there are 3 problems with writing.

There is the problem of making yourself start.
There is the problem of keeping yourself going.
There is the problem of stopping yourself.

Honestly, it's like if you get through #1 and #2, then you face #3. You just don't get satisfied and STOP.

Speculating - Good and bad ideas for MMOs

I was just doing some writing and speculating on things that'd make good or bad MMOs. This was intriguing as I realized an essential thing that makes an MMo work is the world "is" a character or has identifable elements outside of the characters in the story.

Thus for instance i can see a naruto MMO (set in the future of the setting) as Naruto's setting is Over the Top Ninja. I can easily see an Avatar: The Last Airbender MMO (beyond the arena one)..

anyone watching Derran Browns series of tricks atm?

more importantly, how did you react to his 'how to control the nation' trick? I was not convinced at all throughout the show, however i will admit that I felt realy weird during the actual 'hypnotism' part, especialy his intoduction, but i was not stuck to my seat like I should have been.

also- any thiories on his lottery trick? did he realy fix the lottery, or was his deep-maths/wisdom of crowds...
